Antique Wood & Hughes American Sterling Napkin Ring, 1871-1899
Wood and Hughes of New York City made this fine early sterling napkin ring. The elongated design of the cartouche continues into the designs on each side with loops around repousse hearts. The side designs finish with flowers, leaves, and stems. There is an elegant three letter monogram in the cartouche. The ring is finished on each edge with triple applied bands; one narrow rounded band on the edges, followed by wider scored bands and finishing with narrow bands with rounded surfaces. Inside, the ring is marked "sterling" and "W&H." The form of the maker's logo dates the ring to the period 1871-1899. The style of the napkin ring suggests the ring is from the earliest part of this period. The diameter is 1 5/8 inches and the width is 1 1/2 inches. The napkin ring weighs 34 grams and is in excellent condition.
